Boerne High did what no other football team has been able to do to Alamo Heights since the 2019 season and that’s beat the Mules in a district game.
Alamo Heights entered Friday’s 13-5A DII opener against the Greyhounds with a 34-0 district-win streak that started in 2020, but Boerne was able to make it 34-1 after they defeated the Mules in a classic, 37-35.
BHS improves to 4-1 and goes into its bye week with a 1-0 start to district.
Boerne entered with a pretty impressive district streak as well and was 23-1 going into Friday. Since 2020, Boerne’s only league loss came to the Mules last year.
Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer knew all about the streaks but said it didn’t really matter in the end. He never even mentioned it to his squad.
“We didn’t talk about it, we just play whoever shows up and we were fortunate to get a win,” he said. “It was a good win but it’s another game. We’re 1-0 (in district) and we have more games to go. Just because you win one game, it doesn’t mean you’ve made it, we have a long way to go.”
The Greyhounds ended the first quarter with a 14-7 lead after Callan Combs carried the rock in for a 7-yard TD run. On Boerne’s next possession, BHS QB Grant Sweeney went deep and found Zach Freasier on a 46-yard bomb, while D.K. Garza tallied a touchdown for the Mules on a 17-yard run.
Early in the second, the Greyhounds went with a trick play, and it worked. Sweeney pitched the ball to Freasier who then tossed a scoring strike to Eli Nikolas, who easily beat the drawn-in Mules’ secondary to make it 21-7 after the Diego Jimenez kick.
“Thank goodness it worked because if it doesn’t you look like an idiot,” Sawyer said.
AH tied it with two straight touchdowns after Landon Balldin hauled in an Easton Stone 32-yard pass and then Garza capped another Mules drive with a 1-yard plunge, and it was 21-21 with 47 seconds until halftime.
The Greyhounds stayed aggressive and moved the ball to the Mules 40. With one play left before the halftime buzzer, Sweeney scrambled and then heaved a Hail Mary pass that Nikolas hauled in to give Boerne a 28-21 edge at the break.
Jimenez booted a field goal in the third quarter and Boerne bumped its lead to 31-21, but Garza busted loose for the Mules on a 40-yard sprint and the lead was trimmed to three points at 31-28.
The Greyhounds answered after Combs found the end zone for the second time in the game on a 4-yard scramble, but there were problems on the extra point and the Boerne lead held at 9 points, 37-28.
Garza tacked on his fourth rushing TD of the night to trim it to two points at 37-35 with 2:41 left. Garza entered the game with 950 rushing yards and 15 TDs, but Sawyer said they defended him well despite letting him get into the end zone several times.
“He’s one of the best players around. He’s solid and plays hard,” the coach said. “He’s everything you want. We just tried to make him earn it; he’s going to get his yards and touchdowns but make him earn it and don’t let him get it all at once.”
Boerne’s defense came up big in the game and intercepted Stone three times. C.J. Smith picked off a Stone pass on the first play of the game and then the Greyhounds D came up with two picks in the fourth quarter to seal it.
Jake Perez intercepted a pass early in the final stanza and on the Mules’ final drive, Bobby Jett Wilkinson ended the game with another pick on the last play and then the celebration began for the Greyhounds.
