SCHERTZ — The Geneva School of Boerne forced three consecutive fumbles in the first half and never looked back, cruising to 49-6 victory over Schertz John Paul II in a district matchup Friday night in Cibolo.
The Eagles (4-1) built a 35-0 halftime lead as the defense forced JPII to fumble their first three possessions. The Eagles converted all three turnovers into touchdowns.
“We put a lot of emphasis on our defensive side of the ball this week,” head coach Bob Rosenstiel said.
The offense capitalized in the short field with junior quarterback Caleb Quitadamo throwing two touchdowns and sophomore running back Shae McNew punching it in from the 1-yard line. The quarterback and running back duo combined for five touchdowns in the first half alone.
Coming out of halftime, the Eagle scored in quick fashion as Quitadamo added to his stats by finding sophomore wide receiver Chase Doran streaking the sidelines for his second touchdown, extending the lead 42-0.
This win for the Eagles came without their two-way leader, senior wide receiver/ safety Brady Chandler and coach Rosenstiel was impressed with his younger players stepping up.
“We had Chase (Doran) step in, I have some younger receivers step in,” Rosenstiel said. “We had big shoes to fill but we had the guys to do it.”
JPII struggled to gain consistent yardage on offense and gave very little resistance on defense to keep the game close.
Geneva will be home Friday to continue district play against Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
