Geneva School of Boerne continues district play Friday at home and hosts Holy Cross, 7 p.m.
The Knights had a great year in 2024 and took a 13-0 record into the TAPPS state championship game last December before they were defeated by Dallas Christian, 21-18, for their only loss of the season.
Holy Cross graduated a lot and started 2025 with losses to Antonian (27-20) and San Antonio Christian (3633) by a total of 10 points, but responded by winning three straight, including last week’s district opener at New Braunfels Christian Academy.
Eagles coach Bob Rosenstiel said even though the Knights graduated a lot and lost their first two games this year, they are starting to put things together.
“Holy Cross looks good again,” he said. “They’re a big strong team with a lot of players. They have a great run game and strategically take their shots in the passing game.”
Holy Cross has dominated Geneva recently and won their last four meetings. Their games in 2021 and 2022 weren’t too bad on the scoreboard with the Knights claiming victories of 28-0 and 25-18, but the last two have been pretty lopsided.
In 2023, the Knights beat Geneva 74-7 and last year Holy Cross claimed the 61-7 victory on its way to the TAPPS state title game.
Rosenstiel said each year is different and isn’t worried about what’s happened in the past. The coach added that he hasn’t talked with his team about their history with the Knights.
“We just prepare each week to go 1-0,” he said.
Geneva enters Friday’s contest at home with an overall record of 4-1 compared to 3-2 for the Knights. Both won their district openers last week.
While Holy Cross defeated New Braunfels Christian, 42-7, the Eagles took care of business against Schertz John Paul II, 49-6.
Geneva was up 49-0 before JP II got on the board with a late touchdown that came with under a minute left in the game.
JP II fumbled on its first three possessions and the Eagles scored on all three. They were up 21-0 in the first quarter and took a 35-0 lead into halftime. Geneva scored twice in the second half but took their foot off the gas pedal and only tallied one TD in the final 21 minutes of the game.
Shae McNew ran for two touchdowns and Reid Wilson added another rushing score, while Eagles QB Caleb Quitadamo tossed four touchdown passes to four different receivers. Chase Doran, Reid Aderholt, Sam Horton and Eli Arnold all grabbed one TD pass apiece.
