Even though it was only their second district game of the season, it was a big victory for the Boerne Champion football team after the Chargers defeated Seguin at Matadors Stadium last Friday, 57-50.
After dropping their district opener to Smithson Valley on Sept. 19, the Chargers didn’t want to slip to 0-2 in 13-5A DI action with New Braunfels, Wagner and Pieper still on the schedule.
Also, MacArthur and Victoria East are waiting in the wings.
Champion heads into its bye week at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district. The Chargers resume district play on Oct. 10 at home against New Braunfels, which is 5-0 in district and beat Victoria East to open league play last Friday, 42-3.
In last Friday’s contest, the Chargers were up on the Matadors and held a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter at 57-35 with 4:34 remaining but two scores by Seguin over the next four minutes made it a 7-point game at 57-50 with 33 seconds left.
Seguin tried an on-side kick, but it was recovered by Brogan Dempsey to ice the victory.
For whatever reason, the last two meetings between the Matadors and Chargers have turned into shootouts.
Last year, Seguin defeated Champion 73-66 for 139 combined points, while this year the teams tallied 107 points for 246 points in two games.
The larger point of emphasis is that last year’s win by Seguin over Champion helped them clinch a playoff spot, while the Chargers are hoping this year’s victory over the Matadors will help their cause this season.
Champion quarterback Julian Navarette was a game-time decision last Friday because of an ankle injury in the Smithson Valley game, but the junior signal caller toughed it out and went 11 for 15 for 207 yards and 2 TDs against Seguin.
Brogan Dempsey and Zachary Lopez both caught touchdown passes, but where the Chargers really hurt the Matadors was on the ground.
Chargers coach Blane Ellis said the difference in wins and losses this year has been their ability to run the ball successfully. When they’ve run it well, they’ve won and when they’ve struggled on the ground they’ve lost.
In last Friday’s game, Champion tallied 303 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns against Seguin.
Caleb Farias was the workhorse and rushed 16 times for 167 yards and 2 scores, while Zachary Garcia finished with 69 yards on 11 totes and 3 touchdowns. Navarette also ran for 67 yards on 12 attempts and scored once.
After tangling with New Braunfels on Oct. 10, the Chargers have MacArthur, Victoria East, Wagner and then Pieper yet to play.
