Boerne High used a successful trick play and a Hail Mary pass on offense that worked, while the defense picked off three passes last Friday against Alamo Heights and it turns out the Greyhound needed every one of those plays to defeat the Mules in the district opener for both teams.
Boerne’s 37-35 win over Alamo Heights at Boerne ISD Stadium before 4,577 fans hands the Mules their first loss in district since November 2019 and snapped their 34-game winning streak in league play.
The Greyhounds start district at 1-0 and have won four straight. After dropping their opener against Pieper in August, they went 4-0 in September and stand at 4-1 overall.
As good as the Greyhounds are playing, BHS coach Brett Sawyer said they are far from where they want to be.
“It’s a good win and we’re fortunate to have won, but at the same time it’s another game,” he said. “We’re 1-0 (in district) and have more games to play. Just because you win a game doesn’t mean you’ve made it. We’re not even there yet, we’re not close to where we want to be.”
Boerne is off this Friday but resumes district play on Oct. 10 at Harlandale. Sawyer said they’ll continue to work over the break and want to build on the win over the Mules.
“I hope we keep getting better and use this to get better. We didn’t play a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, and we just have to continue to get better,” he said. “We have to take it one step at a time and get better every day. Hopefully we’ll get where we want to be.”
Sawyer said they’ll focus on the mental part of the game during their off week.
“We’ll do a lot of mental reps and refocus on our fundamentals,” he said. “We’ll get back to the basics and do them perfectly.”
Mules running back DK Garza ran for four touchdowns, but the Hounds were able to keep him from busting any real long runs.
“We just tried to make him earn it, he’s going to get his yards and touchdowns, but just make him earn it,” Sawyer said. “Don’t let him get it all at once. He’s everything you want in a back, he’s really, really good. He’s one of the best players around.” Garza finished with over 100 rushing yards as the Mules outgained the Greyhounds on the ground 161 to 156, but Boerne hurt the Mules through the air and passed for 349 yards compared to 250 for the Mules.
BHS QB Grant Sweeney went 21 for 28 through the air for 308 yards and 2 TDs.
Eli Nikolas had a big receiving night and hauled in a 41-yard pass from Zach Freasier on a wide-receiver trick-play pass and then Nikolas caught the 40-yard Hail Mary at the halftime buzzer from Sweeney. Nikolas totaled 147 receiving yards on 7 catches and two TDs.
Freasier also recorded a receiving touchdown, while Callan Combs paced the Boerne ground game with 76 yards on 13 carries and ran in two scores.
The Greyhounds made their first field goal of the year after Diego Jimenez booted a 35-yarder that proved to be the difference in the game.
Defensively, C.J. Smith, Jake Perez and Bobby Jett Wilkinson all intercepted passes, with Wilkinson and Perez picking off passes in the fourth quarter to turn the Mules away. Kole Traylor finished with 11 tackles and Cooper Thompson added 10 tackles.
