Library: Book Fest, bookmobile, scary celebration

THE BOOKWORM

Annual Boerne Book Festival

For the first time in a long while, the festival will take place on library grounds. Please join us Saturday, Oct. 4, for one of the best ones we’ve ever hosted.

Featured programs this year include cookbook authors with Les Dames d’Escoffier, bestselling authors Bryan Burrough and Stephen Harrigan, children’s book author and artist Kazu Kibuishi, the popular Writers’ League of Texas panel discussion, a program about the Folklore Society of Texas, and a “Writing to Heal” panel discussion.

Our featured vendor tents on the back lawn of the library will include The Writers’ League of Texas, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, San Antonio Sci-Fi and Fantasy Writers, Sisters in Crime, South Texas Authors of Romance, UT Press, Texas Tech University Press, Trinity University Press and Texas A&M Press Consortium.

The Book Fairy will be on hand all day once again and authors from SCBWI will read from their children’s books on the Amphitheater Stage.

Miss Constance will be on hand with cookies from Salty & Sweet at 10 a.m.

Parking is at a premium, so please consider carpooling. City Hall will have some additional parking and you can also park behind the Visitors Center on Main Street.

New bookmobile

We are so excited to announce that our bookmobile will be here any day. We are still trying to work out how we can put it to optimal use, but we already have some ideas.

The bookmobile will be filled with books, programming and a bit of technology. The library staff can’t wait to provide more accessibility to a wider array of residents. Stay tuned.

Spooky program for families

Families are invited to join us for a HOWL-OWeen program at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at Herff Farmers Market. Participants will enjoy tales, tunes, crafting, tasty Halloween treats and a visit with some lovable dogs from Boerne Animal Care.

We hope that deserving doggies will find their forever homes that day, but if you want to help in other ways, you can donate items for pets, including toys, grooming, and food. Herff Farmers Market is located at 33 Herff Road here in Boerne.

‘Live! at the Library’ With the fall weather here, we’re looking forward to a nice, temperate evening of music and a happy crowd. On Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., the Kathy Bauer Trio will be performing pop/rock tunes with just a dash of spice.

Be sure to bring a picnic supper and something comfy to sit on. This concert is part of our monthly Live! at the Library series. They take place on the third Thursday of each month.

Water Conservation Series continues

Water expert Larry Sunn of Rain Bees has been facilitating a 14-week series on water conservation. Each week, a knowledgeable presenter has been on hand to share information on a wide range of fascinating topics such as our aquifer system, building your own rainwater catchment system, native plants and drip irrigation.

This week, from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 8, the workshop will guide you through the process of finding common household water leaks, as well as providing tips for optimizing indoor water efficiency.

You’ll learn how to check your toilet for leaks, inspect common places you may find leaks and how to find those “sneaky leaks.” All these sessions are free and open to the public.

Employee recognition

Each year the city of Boerne celebrates its employees with a lovely luncheon and awards ceremony. Many of our staff were nominated, and we are so proud of them.

Erica Metz and Libby Quintero were honored for their five years of service, and Constance Keremes was recognized for her 20 years of service.

Our big winner this year was Libby Quintero, who was also honored for graduating from the city’s first Leadership Program, and she received the well-deserved Director’s Award from Library Director Natalie Shults.

We are proud of all our nominees and winners.
