Boerne Champion returns to District 13-5A DI action this week and the Chargers draw a tough opponent in their first game back after their bye week.
The Chargers host undefeated New Braunfels Friday at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
Champion coach Blane Ellis said the Unicorns are as talented as their record indicates.
“They’re good, anybody that is 5-0 is good. That doesn’t just happen to a team, if you’re 5-0, you’re good,” he said. “They haven’t hit the meat of their district schedule but they’re a quality team and have played good pre-district games and beat quality teams.”
Ellis said the Unicorns will run the ball and then beat a team over the top with the pass.
“Offensively, they establish the run and then throw off that,” he said. “Defensively, they run to the ball well.”
Ellis said the Chargers have to establish the run, win third downs and limit the Unicorns’ big plays.
The coach said they’re starting to heal up and added that they’re in good shape as far as injuries. He noted that they welcomed the recent bye week and went back to the basics while healing up.
“Our biggest focus was fundamentals and getting our legs back under us,” he said.
Champion is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district. They lost to Smithson Valley and defeated Seguin in their last game, 57-50.
Chargers QB Julian Navarette was coming off an ankle injury against the Matadors, but the coach said it didn’t slow him down.
“We were able to do the things we wanted to do with him,” Ellis said. “There were no limitations.”
