COMFORT – The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Comfort football team.
The beat-up Bobcats are off this Friday and then return to action on Oct. 17 when they face Rogers in the district opener.
Comfort head coach Jay Rieken said their main priority will be to rest over the next few weeks.
“We’ve got to get healthy and try to get back to basics, we have to heal up,” he said. “The break comes at a good time; we need to rest.”
Comfort started the season at 4-0 but dropped its last two to close out non-district as injuries caught up with the team.
The Bobcats were in a close game with Bandera last Friday but lost 28-20 after neither team scored in the final quarter.
Rieken said those first six games took a toll on them.
“We played some really physical football games and have been in them all but one and even that one against Llano was physical,” he said. “We should have won at least one more. We had chances against Bandera, they’re a good ball club and they’re 5-0 for a reason but we had our chances.”
Comfort is down to 23 healthy players that can suit up. Rieken hopes to get a few more back when they visit Rogers on Oct. 17.
“We have to rejuvenate our bodies a little bit and get that sense the real season starts now and focus on that,” he said.
Rieken said they’ve added a few plays each week to the system and will continue to do so even through district action.
“We always add a little wrinkle each week,” he said. “We’ll always add something, whether it shows much or not, there’s always little wrinkles added.”
After Rogers, the Bobcats face Thrall, Lexington and Blanco. There are five teams in their district, and four teams advance into the postseason.
