Warriors are coming off a game where they gave up 527 rushing yards to Mules’ Garza
Two high- scoring offenses will take to the field Friday when Boerne High hosts Victoria West.
The Greyhounds are 5-1 and have won five straight games, while the Warriors are 6-1 overall after starting the year at 6-0.
Boerne (2-0 in district) and West (2-1 in district) kick off at 7 p.m., Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.
Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said the Warriors have a lot of offensive weapons.
“They’re talented and very athletic, the question is can you stop the big plays against them?” Sawyer asked. “They score a lot and can score from anywhere; their record is not an accident.”
West tallied 41, 59 and 42 points in their three district games so far. Alamo Heights handed the Warriors their first loss last Friday, 54-42, after Mules running back D.K. Garza exploded for 527 rushing yards and added another 85 receiving yards.
Garza finished with 612 yards from scrimmage and scored six touchdowns and put himself in the Texas high school record books with his performance.
“Neither team could stop each other and the crazy thing is that nobody scored in the fourth quarter, that was all in the first three quarters,” Sawyer said. “I think so far, we’ve held Garza to the fewest yards in a game from what I’ve seen and read.”
The 527 rushing yards recorded by Garza is the best in 5A history and ninth most for a single game in UIL history.
Boerne’s defense “held” Garza to about 100 yards on the ground, and Sawyer said he hopes they can contain some of the weapons that Victoria West has. The BHS coach added that if they can sustain some drives, hopefully that will limit how much damage the Warriors can do.
“You try to keep the ball away from them,” he said. “You do the best you can with that.”
The Greyhounds tallied 49 points in last Friday’s win over Harlandale and scored 21, 14 and 14 points through the first three quarters before taking their foot off the gas pedal.
Sawyer said they’ve gotten better each week and likes where they stand now but still wants to improve.”
“I’m happy with where we’re at, but we want to improve every week,” he said. “This is the best we can be at this point in the season, but we want to continue to play at a high level.”
BHS QB Grant Sweeney tossed for 410 yards and three touchdowns on 25 of 33 passing. Three different Greyhound receivers passed the 100-yard receiving mark after Eli Nikolas caught 8 passes for 147 yards and 3 scores, Zach Freasier added 108 yards on 5 catches and Jacob Hicks snagged 5 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Greyhounds also rushed for 185 yards and totaled 595 yards from scrimmage, although Boerne didn’t have anyone reach the 100yard rushing mark.
Sweeney ran 4 times for 59 yards and 2 TDs, Callan Combs tallied 67 yards on 6 totes and Jeff Morrison added 21 yards and scored once, while Logan Kolle ran for 38 yards on 6 carries.
Defensively, Cooper Thompson finished with 8 tackles, while Ronald Smith, Hadden Silva and Cash Gatlin all recorded 6 stops.
Bobby Jett Wilkinson came up with an interception, while Jake Perez and C.J. Smith both caused fumbles in the game.
