Geneva hits the road to face Hill Country Christian

Geneva School of Boerne is looking to get back to its winning ways as they visit Hill Country Christian on Friday for a district game.

The Eagles started the year at 3-0, but have dropped three of their last four, including their last two district contests, to stand at 4-3 overall.

Geneva won its district opener at John Paul II, 49-6, but are only 1-2 in league play with losses to Holy Cross (46-14) and New Braunfels Christian Academy (48-41).

The biggest culprit in the two district losses has been turnovers, nine in those two games, with all nine – six interceptions and three fumbles – resulting in touchdowns for their opponents.

Geneva head coach Bob Rosenstiel said it’s an issue they need to address.

“The turnovers we’ve had in the last few weeks are from lack of ball security, both fumbles and interceptions,” he said. “We have to hang on to the ball and know that it’s okay to throw it away and live to play another down.”

The turnovers knocked them out of the game with Holy Cross, but the Eagles almost overcame those miscues against NB Christian and only lost by seven points.

“We’re making mistakes that are hurting ourselves and killing drives,” Rosenstiel said. “I think we’re unstoppable as long as we take care of the ball. When you turn over the ball, the percentage of winning goes down.”

Hill Country Christian is 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district. They played a non-district game last week and have already had their bye week, while Geneva isn’t scheduled for their bye or off week until Oct. 31.

Both the Eagles and the Knights have defeated Schertz John Paul II. The Knights played Somerset Academy Collegiate in last week’s non-district game and won 58-14.

“Hill Country Christian is a well-rounded team, they can run and pass the ball,” Rosenstiel said. “The defense is consistent and rarely allows big plays. Most concerning would be their run game.”

The Knights ran for 196 yards in last week’s win and scored two rushing touchdowns but were effective throwing the ball and finished with three passing touchdowns.

After a 3-0 start to the season, the Eagles have gone 1-3 in their last four, and Rosenstiel said they’re still trying to put together a complete game.

“We haven’t had one yet and we’re seven games into it, that’s to be expected,” he said. “We still have a ways to go. I think we’re close, but we’re dropping like flies (because of injuries).”
