Both Boerne Champion varsity water polo teams picked up third-round wins on Tuesday and have breezed through the first three rounds of the playoffs as they roll into this weekend’s regional tournament.
The Region IV water polo tourney is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Southwest Aquatics Center in SanAntonio.
In a battle of Charger squads on Tuesday, Champion beat Churchill on the boys side, 24-14, and the Champion girls defeated New Braunfels Canyon, 18-9.
Champion played S.A. Taft in the regional semifinals Friday, while the Lady Chargers tangled with Brennan Friday in the regional semis.
The winners of those two matches advance to Saturday’s regional championship with a trip to the state tournament up for grabs.

The Champion boys have won their three playoff matches by a combined score of 61-23, while the Lady Chargers picked up their three wins by a combined score of 49-17.
Varsity Boys
In Champion’s 24-14 win over Churchill, the Chargers were up 8-1 in the first and took a 16-4 lead into halftime after winning the second period, 8-3. Churchill outscored Champion in the second half, 10-8, with 7 of those goals coming in the fourth quarter.
Will Harrison paced the team with 8 goals, Julius Hoxhaj added 5 goals, EJ Altermatt and Aaron Mendoza both netted 3 goals, while five other players tallied one goal each.
Baylor Slay came up with 4 steals, Jackson Hankins chipped in with 4 assists, Nash Belson added 3 assists, while Hoxhaj and Harrison both finished with 2 assists and six others recorded one assist apiece for the Chargers team that tallied 17 assists.
Jackson Hankins and Knox Armstrong both came up with 7 saves in the goalie position to help in the win..
Varsity Girls
Champion was up 6-0 in the first and outscored the Cougars in the second, 7-3, for the 13-3 halftime lead. NB Canyon won the second half, 6-5, with 5 of those goals in the final stanza.
Breanna Hempton led the team with 5 goals, Bennett Rice added 3 goals, Cora Skoog,Addison Homann and Lila Akin all chipped in with 2 goals, while four others netted 1 goal each.
Homann tallied a team-high 5 assists, Skoog added 3 assists, Madi Neuman recorded 2 assists, while five others had 1 assist apiece for the Lady Chargers team that totaled 15 assists in the match. Homann also led the team in steals with 5.
Cayden Van Dyne came up with 11 saves and Ava Mueller had 4 saves from the goalie position.
The Lady Chargers improved their overall record to 26-6-1 after Tuesday’s win, while the boys are 23-8 overall.
