Victoria West came into Boerne ISD Stadium averaging 52 points a game, but the Greyhound defense found a way to slow down the high-flying Warriors Friday at BISD Stadium.
Boerne High clamped down on Victoria West and held the Warriors to a season- low 14 points on its way to a 24-14 victory.
The Greyhound defense gave up a score to Victoria West on its opening drive of the game, but then the Warriors came up empty on their next seven possessions.
Included in those stops by the Boerne “D” were two second-half interceptions and a goal-line stand by the Greyhounds after Victoria West had a 1st-and-goal at the BHS 1-yard line in the third quarter with Boerne up 17-7.
The Warriors tried to pound the ball between the tackles on four straight plays from the 1, but Boerne stuffed them each time to keep the Warriors at 7 total points through the first three quarters.
Victoria West handed the ball to big-bodied back Andrew Henley, who had their first score, but Henley was turned away on all four carries.
Boerne Head Coach Brett Sawyer said the defense played great, especially down on the goal line.
“We challenged them and they did it,” he said. “We had our back against the wall and they responded. That was huge.”
In the second half, Robert Estes intercepted a Nolan Boyce pass to kill a Warriors’ drive after Victoria West had reached the Boerne 22-yard line.
Jake Perez also picked up off a Boyce pass in the fourth quarter to give Boerne the ball with 5:05 left. From there, the Greyhound offense drained the clock with three first downs behind some tough running by Jeff Morrison.
The Boerne offense went into ball-control in the fourth quarter, and they were able to burn about nine minutes of game time in that final stanza.
Sawyer said the offense had a role in the victory as well as they played keep away in the fourth quarter.
“How do you win an ugly game? You grind it out and you run the clock,” Sawyer said. “That was fun to see.”
The Boerne offense scored in three of four quarters. Diego Jimenez booted a 35-yard field goal on the Greyhounds’ first possession.
Victoria West answered and scored on their opening drive after Henley ran it in from the 14 for the 7-3 lead.
However, Boerne responded on their second possession after Grant Sweeney hit Eli Nikolas on a 14-yard touchdown pass, and the Hounds were back on top 10-7.
Late in the second, Callan Combs ran it in from the 4 to help Boerne take a 17-7 advantage at halftime.
BHS bumped the lead to 24-7 after Sweeney capped a 3-play drive with a 5-yard run to the pylon for the score. The drive covered 65 yards, but Boerne only needed three plays to score because Sweeney hit Zach Freasier on a 61-yard bomb to set them up in the red zone.
Sweeney connected on two 61-yard bombs in the game after he hit Nikolas earlier to set up one of the scores.
The Greyhounds have won six straight and improve to 6-1. Boerne takes a 3-0 district record into Thursday’s game against Veterans Memorial at Rutledge Stadium.
