SAN ANTONIO – Boerne Champion came into Thursday’s game in San Antonio against MacArthur on a mission. They jumped out early against their District 13-5A D1 rivals, and never looked back, winning handily by a final score of 35-6 at Heroes Stadium.

Champion (4-3, 2-2) jumped out early, methodically moving the ball on their first offensive possession. Freshman quarterback Ryder Flugence was steady under center, leading an eight-play drive that was capped off by junior running back Caleb Farias’ 18-yard touchdown run.

“We’re super excited about a district win,” Boerne Champion head coach Blaine Ellis said. “A win in this district is tough. We had a great first half. We came out hot, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do.”

The Chargers capitalized on a special teams miscue by the Brahmas (0-7, 0-4) late in the first quarter for their second score, when Farias earned his second touchdown of the night off a plunge from oneyard out.

“We established the run on offense and defensively we controlled the line of scrimmage,” Ellis said. “We did a tremendous job rallying to the ball.”

Midway through the second quarter, the Chargers snuffed out a Brahmas drive thanks to an interception by senior defensive back Jayden Davis. Showing composure beyond his years, Flugence was able to keep the ensuing drive alive with timely scrambles. He tossed his first touchdown on the night on a one-yard completion to senior wideout Brogan Dempsey.

After Champion forced a MacArthur turnover on downs, Flugence tossed his second touchdown on the night when he connected with senior Zachary Garcia on a beautiful 55-yard catchand run. On the next series, he found Dempsey again, this time on a 54-yard touchdown strike to put the Chargers up 35-0.

“We’re very excited for [Ryder],” said Ellis. “We knew that was there and we’re excited that he came out and did exactly what he needed to do.”

In the second half, the Chargers defense clamped down on the Brahmas, who didn’t reach the end zone until 5:53 left in the game. Champion sealed the victory thanks to a late interception by junior cornerback Ryan McDonald.

“[The defense] played with a great edge,” said Ellis. “They were being very physical up front, and they were swarming to the ball. That’s something that we’ve talked about for the last three or four weeks. We’re really, really coming on.”

The Chargers improved to 8-0 all-time against MacArthur and gained some much-needed momentum in district play. They will look to continue their winning ways as they take on the visiting Victoria East Titans Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it’s homecoming week for the Chargers.
