Eagles’ defense picks up slack in the win

CEDAR PARK — Prevailing after a slow start, Geneva School of Boerne found rhythm to get stops on defense and capitalize on offense for the 28-12 road victory over the Hill Country Christian Academy Knights.

Overcoming early offensives woes, the Eagles defense forced consecutive interceptions, first by junior safety Reid Aderholt tracking the deep ball, then sophomore linebacker Shae McNew jumping in front of the wideout.

Both interceptions put the Eagles in good field position for junior quarterback Caleb Quitadamo to find sophomore wide receiver Chase Doran twice for touchdowns, extending the Eagles’ lead to 21-3 in the second quarter.

It was critical for the defense to step up as uncharacteristic miscues with two dropped balls and two presnap penalties by the Eagles put them at an early 3-0 deficit.

“ Our defense really stepped up today,” Geneva head coach Bob Rosenstiel said. “They’re learning and that investment we make every week is starting to pay off.”

The Eagles continued to force turnovers in the second half as McNew was in the backfield to retrieve a tip ball for his second interception.

In the second half, Hill Country made a quarterback change, replacing senior quarterback Jack Young with sophomore quarterback Colton Keenan.

The switch at QB gave Hill Country some life as Keenan found sophomore wide receiver Christian McGee in traffic. He accelerated downfield to score and narrow the lead 21-10 toward the end of the third quarter.

During the fourth quarter, Hill Country’s offense was marching down the field and trying to make a comeback, but the Eagles defense made an impressive goal stand at the 1-yard line.

The Eagles secured the win with the fourth interception of the day by Doran, catching a lofting pass.

This win for the Eagles (6-2 overall, 3-1 in district) came after a loss last week vs New Braunfels Christian Academy.

With some injuries and struggles, coach Rosenstiel has the Eagles playing efficient football and protecting the ball — the key to finishing the season strong.

“Just play clean football,” Rosenstiel said. “We have to protect the ball.”

Geneva plays a rare Saturday game this week, traveling to face TMI-Episcopal.
