SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne High tennis team was hoping to go a little deeper into the 5A state playoffs, but their 2025 season came to an end Friday after the Greyhounds were defeated by Flour Bluff in the Region IV-5A championship match or fifth round.
In just their second year at the 5A level, the Greyhounds were one victory away from advancing to the state tournament.
BHS coach Tyson Stewart said it was a great season.
“We accomplished a lot as a team, and I want us to be proud of that,” he said. “In our second year in 5A and to finish second in the region and top 8 in the state is nothing to be sad about.”
In Friday’s finals, the Greyhounds were up 4-3 after doubles, but Flour Bluff won 7 of the singles matches to get to 10, while the Hounds won 4 singles matches.
It was tied 8-8 at one point, but the Hornets had a strong finish to win the regional title and took the final two matches to clinch it.
The Greyhounds finish their season at 17-3.
Vs. Mission Sharyland
The day before, BHS beat Mission Sharyland Thursday in the semis, 10-7.
Sharyland had defeated the Greyhounds in last year’s regional tournament, so Stewart said it was nice to get a little payback.
“These kids worked their tails off, and it was a little revenge from last year,” he said. “We gutted out a win, that was awesome. They’re a great team, but we figured out the puzzle today.”
In Boerne’s third-round playoff match against Champion, and again on Thursday, Nick Dube clinched the 10th win to end the match. Stewart jokingly called Dube “Mr. Clutch.”
“He has a big serve and whenever we use it the way it’s supposed to be, there’s not a kid out here who could handle it consistently,” the coach said.
Dube said there were nine wins before him since it’s the first to 10 and gave credit to his teammates.
“I was the last match but there were a lot of other big matches before me,” he said. “All the boys and girls played awesome.”
Both Stewart and Dube pointed out that Lauren Weisel’s win at No 5 girls singles was big too because it was the only girls victory of the day.
Along with their win at No. 5 girls singles, the Hounds won five boys singles matches, a mixed doubles and all three boys doubles matches to get 10 wins.
Dube said everybody deserves credit but admits clinching the final win feels great.
“It’s nice, it’s like sealing the deal,” he said. “The pressure is lifted, to put it away is awesome.”
