Geneva plays TMI in a non-district contest Saturday

The Geneva School of Boerne football team will take a break from district action this week and play a rare Saturday game at TMI – Episcopal.

Eagles head coach Bob Rosenstiel said the game was moved to Saturday because they have a fundraiser on Friday. After Saturday’s contest with the Panthers, the Eagles have a bye and then close out the regular season at home against Corpus Christi John Paul II.

Geneva is coming off a 28-12 win over Hill Country Christian School last Friday in Austin. It turned into an odd game in a lot of ways, but the Eagles were able to overcome adversity and win.

First, Geneva wasn’t allowed to take the field until 6 p.m. and once it started, they lost power, and the game was delayed about 20 minutes.

Whatever the reason, the Eagles got off to a slow start and were trailing 3-0 at the end of the first quarter but found their stride after that and took a 21-3 lead into halftime.

“Yes, we had a slow start, it was an odd situation,” Rosenstiel said. “But we settled down and had some help from our defense.”

Eagles QB Caleb Quitadamo ran in Geneva’s first touchdown, then Quitadamo tossed a 17-yard scoring strike to Chase Doran that was set up by a Reid Aderholt interception he returned 29 yards to set up the offense in good shape.

Geneva tacked on one more touchdown before the halftime break after Doran hauled in another touchdown pass from Quitadamo with just eight ticks on the clock and Parker Eiland converted his third extra point.

HCC recorded the first score of the second half on a 72-yard TD pass to trim the lead to 21-10, but the Eagles answered with a short touchdown run by Noah Brunsvold to bump its lead to 28-10 after the Eiland PAT.

The only other score after that came when Geneva gave up a safety in the fourth quarter for the final of 28-12.

The Eagles are 6-2 overall and 3-1 in district after their loss to Holy Cross was turned into a win via a forfeit after TAPPS placed sanctions on the Knights and took away four of their wins.

TMI is 5-1 and is not in a district, so they play an outlaw schedule.

Rosenstiel said the Panthers have some athletes they have to keep an eye on.

“TMI has some explosive players,” he said. “This is their first season with this new coach, and it looks like they’re finding their stride and have been improving every week.”

After the TMI game, Geneva is finally off on Oct. 31 before closing out the regular season on Nov. 7.

Rosenstiel said it’ll be nice for the players to get some downtime.

“We’re getting pretty thin at some positions,” he said. “We’re looking forward to a bye week and hopefully get some kids back.”
