Either Comfort High or Thrall will pick up their first district win this Friday when the Bobcats host the Tigers in Comfort, 7 p.m.
The Bobcats dropped their district opener last week in Rogers to stand at 0-1 (4-3 overall) in league play, while Thrall is 0-2 in district (2-6 overall).
In a five-team district, which means only four league games, sometimes one win gets a team into the playoffs since four teams make it.
It seems like Friday’s winner will have the inside track to one of those four playoff spots up for grabs.
Comfort coach Jay Rieken said it’s an important contest for that reason.
“We have to treat this game like a playoff game,” Rieken said.
The coach also added that they need a fast start on Friday.
“We can’t continue to bury ourselves,” he said. “We have to get out of the hole we dug last week. We have to eliminate penalties and turnovers.”
Comfort coughed up two fumbles last week at Rogers and dropped a few passes. The Bobcats went up 6-0 on the Eagles but then didn’t score the rest of the way as Rogers tallied 39 unanswered points. Rogers was up 26-6 by halftime.
Comfort’s Carter Pape had a good game running the ball and finished with 128 yards on the ground on 17 carries, while Bobcat QB Omar Rivera tossed the team’s only score to Gabriel Gonzalez on a 12-yard pass early in the first quarter.
Jovani Zapata led Comfort’s receivers with 26 yards on two catches.
Rieken said Thrall is a much better team than their record indicates (2-6, 0-2).
“They’re a good team,” he said. “Their record doesn’t reflect how good they are.”
Thrall’s two wins have come against Eastside Early College (43-36) and Hempstead (28-6).
“They are big and fast,” Rieken said. “They are solid on defense and are very multiple on offense.”
After Thrall, Comfort is at Lexington on Oct. 31and then hosts Blanco on Nov. 7 to close out the regular season.
