Both Boerne Champion cross country teams finished third at Monday’s Region IV-5A meet in Corpus Christi to advance to this year’s state meet.
The top four teams and top 10 individuals not on an advancing team qualify for this year’s 5A state meet scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31 in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park.
Varsity Girls
The top three teams at regionals were all from District 26-5A after Smithson Valley (49), New Braunfels (89) and Champion (115) went 1-2-3, while Leander (153) was fourth and advanced to state.
For Champion, Rebecca Bezerra turned in a top-10 finish after she was fifth in the adjusted scoring with a time of 19:01.
Emma Radtke was 13th in 20:01, Luciana Zazueta Ibarra clocked in at 20:53 for 29th, Elena Duran came in 33rd after running a 21:03, Addison Graham finished two spots back in 35th with a time of 21:07, Abigail Alger posted a 22:49 for 85th and Payton Kidder rounded out the team by recording a 23:43 for 109th.
Varsity Boys
Champion was the only boys team not from the Rio Grande Valley to make it to state after Weslaco East (46), McAllen (61) and Donna (182) went 1-24, while the Chargers were third with 127 points.
Champion did a good job of pack running after their top six finishers were within 21 places of each other in the field of 189 runners.
Noah Moreno paced the Chargers after he placed 17th in 17:06, Adan Valdez came in 24th with a 17:19, Mason Nelson posted a 17:21 for 27th, Shawn Edwards was one spot back in 28th with a 17:21, Sebastian Carvallo completed the course in 17:32 for 31st, Brandon Martinez recorded a 17:42 for 37th, while Abhiram Bhogireddy was 83rd in 18:44.
