Greyhounds scurry past the Patriots

CONVERSE — A fast start by Boerne High School created a deficit the Patriots of Veterans Memorial couldn’t overcome and sealed the deal for the Greyhounds, 45-27.

In the first half of Thursday’s game at Rutledge Stadium, junior quarterback Grant Sweeney caught fire in the pocket, connecting with four different receivers for touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Eli Nikolas opened the scoring, creating separation in the corner of the end zone for Sweeney’s first touchdown pass of the night.

Senior defensive lineman Blake Burkholder also contributed on offense, slipping behind the defense for a short touchdown as Sweeney rolled out of the pocket.

Junior wide receiver Zach Freasier added to the scoring on a deep post route, and junior tight end Beau Dayoc hauled in a slant for another touchdown, giving the Greyhounds a commanding 28–7 halftime lead.

Head coach Brett Sawyer credits the depth at the wide receiver position mixed with the schemes that allow multiple players to score.

“I got a lot of talented kids. Hopefully we keep finding ways to get them the ball and keep the defense guessing and taking advantage of what they (defense) give us,” Sawyer said.

In the second half, Freasier was the catapult for the ‘Hounds offense, making defenders miss and running past the defense to extend the lead 45-15 in the fourth quarter.

“He’s a great athlete,” Sawyer said. “He’s a special player and keeps getting better.”

Complementing the offense was an opportunistic defense and special teams led by senior linebacker Robert Estes, who recovered a fumble and a muffed punt.

Despite being behind the entirety of the game, San Antonio Veterans Memorial continued to fight, leaning on its counter-run game where senior running back Trecorrus Jordan found the end zone three times for the Patriots.

With two games left in the season, Sawyer believes in “defense wins championship,” and looks to improve that side of the ball even more before the playoffs.

“We always have stuff to improve on,” Sawyer said. “Our fits got to get better.”

Boerne (7-1, 4-0) returns home for its next district game against McCollum on Thursday at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
