Bobcats visit Lexington, still in hunt for playoff spot

Comfort High picked up a much-needed win last Friday at home against Thrall to snap a three-game skid.

The Bobcats look to build on that victory as they visit Lexington Friday to continue district action. After that, Comfort is home Friday to host arch-rival Blanco to close out the regular season.

While last Friday’s 57-43 district victory by the Comfort football team over Thrall didn’t guarantee a playoff spot for the Bobcats, it sure did go a long way towards that goal.

In a five-team district where four teams make the playoffs, one win will sometimes clinch a postseason berth, and Comfort hopes that’s the case this year.

There are two more weeks of football in the regular season, and a lot can happen during that time and that win over Thrall should help, but Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said they have to keep their foot on the gas pedal.

“The playoff picture will clear up after Friday, but we are still not in,” he said.

Blanco is atop the district standings, while everyone else is chasing them. The Panthers have clinched, but three other teams – Rogers, Lexington and Comfort – are all 1-1, while Thrall is 0-3.

Either Comfort or Lexington will emerge with a win on Friday and clinch a spot. If Thrall loses to Rogers on Friday, Comfort will get in regardless of what happens in their game at Lexington.

Lexington is coming off a 35-33 loss to Blanco last week and is led by Kase Evans, a 6-foot-3 Iowa State commit, who threw for 3,113 yards and 37 touchdowns, while completing 61 percent of his passing in 2024.

Evans just surpassed 10,000 passing yards in his varsity career.

Rieken said their defense is going to have their hands full and they have to try to put pressure on Evans.

“They max protect a lot, but we’ve got to get creative and have to get to him,” the coach said.

With a DI athlete like Evans leading the team, Rieken said the Eagles will be tough to beat.

“They are a really good football team, with a great quarterback and receivers,” he said. “They’re solid everywhere.”

Rieken hopes to borrow a page from the Blanco playbook. The Panthers beat Lexington last week by being physical, playing good defense and running the ball down their throats to wear the Eagles down.

The Comfort coach said he knows his team is capable of playing a solid game against Lexington.

“We can be pretty good when we play up to our potential,” he said.
