Six different Greyhound scored touchdowns in Thursday’s district contest against McCollum and helped the Boerne High football team defeat the Cowboys, 42-0.

Boerne High rolled to its eighth straight win and bumped its overall record to 8-1. The Greyhounds are 5-0 in 13-5A DII and look to close out a perfect district season Friday at Kerrville Tivy and wrap up the league title in the process.

It was a slow start for the Boerne offense after they fumbled on their first drive and failed to convert a 4th and 3 at the Cowboys’ 22-yard line on their second possession.

Fortunately for the offense, the Greyhound defense picked up the slack after Ben Bays intercepted a Jordan Casares pass and returned it 55 yards for a Pick-6 touchdown and a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

McCollum had the chance to tie it up early in the second, but Boerne’s defense pressured Casares on a 4th and 2 at the BHS 17 and forced a rushed throw that missed a wide-open receiver near the end zone.

That’s as close as the Cowboys came to scoring after the Greyhound defense recorded a shutout for the first time this year, while McCollum was kept off the board for the first time this season.

After that, it was all Boerne. Jeff Morrison scrambled in from the 4-yard line, and it was 14-0 with 3:53 remaining until halftime, and the Greyhounds weren’t done scoring before the break.

After a Cowboys punt, Boerne took over with 2:17 left in the half and only needed about a minute to score after QB Grant Sweeney tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Will Traylor and it was 21-0 at intermission.

Once the third quarter started, the Greyhounds punted on their opening drive but got on track after that. Blake Burkholder recovered a McCollum fumble at the BHS 9-yard line, and it didn’t take long for the offense to cash in.

Three plays later, Callan Combs scampered into the end zone, and it was 28-0 early in the third.

Boerne’s next offensive drive ended with a trip to the end zone as well after Eli Nikolas caught a 23-yard pass from Sweeney to cap a two-play drive to pull ahead 35-0. Morrison ripped off a 48-yard run before the TD pass to set up the Greyhounds deep in McCollum territory.

Late in the third quarter, Sweeney was the sixth Greyhound to score after the BHS QB kept the ball on a 1st and goal at the 4 and sprinted into the end zone for the 42-0 lead to cap a four-play drive.

Boerne only needed nine plays to score its three touchdowns in the third quarter as they showed their quick-strike ability.

After that, the Hounds put it in cruise control and primarily ran the ball to drain the clock and lock up another win.
