Now that the Boerne Champion football team has clinched a playoff spot after last Friday’s 45-22 win over Wagner, the only question left in the regular season for the Chargers is what place they will finish in District 13-5A DI.
Champion can finish anywhere between second and fourth, depending on what happens in Friday’s regular-season finale in the district.
The Chargers close out 13-5A DI play this Friday at Pieper. Champion is 4-2 in district (6-3 overall), Pieper is 5-1 and New Braunfels is 4-2 and plays Wagner. Smithson Valley (6-0) sits atop the league standings.
If the Chargers win and New Braunfels loses, then Champion could move up to the No. 2 seed.
If Champion and New Braunfels both win, it’ll come down to point differential, and the Chargers could be third depending on how many points they and the Unicorns win by.
Also, Champion would end up in fourth place with a loss to Pieper regardless of what New Braunfels does. The top two teams in each district at 5A get to host first-round games.
Regardless of where they finish in the final standings, head coach Blane Ellis said the team did a great job making the playoffs.
After a 27-17 loss to New Braunfels on Oct. 10, the Chargers have reeled off three straight victories and have won four of their last five to qualify for the postseason.
“It was well earned,” Ellis said, “the kids did well.”
Pieper wants to win on Friday because it will guarantee they finish second and that they host a first-round playoff game.
After defeating Boerne High in the season opener on Aug. 29, Pieper lost two straight but righted the ship and won five of their last six.
Even though the game with Boerne High was back in August and most of the teams out there are light years different, Ellis said they can still pick up things on film from that BHS – Pieper game on Aug. 29 that will help them going into Friday.
“ Teams are more dynamic this time of year, but we can get a good look at the base and know how they want to do things,” he said. “There are schemes and formations we can draw on, both offensively and defensively.”
Ellis said the Warriors are much better than they were in August and added that they like to sling the ball around the field via the pass.
“They have more on the menu and are more multiple now, but they still are who they are,” Ellis said. “As the season progresses, they’ve added things and we have to prepare for it.”
While the Warriors are better than they were in August, the Chargers are too. Champion is pretty close to being healthy after battling through injuries for most of the season.
Ellis said they went through a tough stretch there.
“When you got guys that get little dings and injuries, that’s just part of our game and other guys have stepped up really well,” he said. “The grit these guys have, the trust and belief they have in each other is a true testament to this group. They really do believe in each other and believe in what we’re doing.”
While Champion is in the postseason they still won’t know who they play until after Friday. They would be matched up against District 14-5A DI that contains some Laredo schools, Eagle Pass Winn, along with Southwest, Southwest Legacy, Southside and John Jay.
Jay is 6-1 and currently leading the district, while Southwest, Laredo Nixon and Southside are all 5-2 and Southwest Legacy is 5-3.
