SAN ANTONIO – After getting defeated by Holy Cross in district volleyball twice this year, the Geneva School of Boerne faced off with the Lady Knights a third time Tuesday night in the second round of the TAPPS state playoffs.
Holy Cross swept Geneva in their district meetings, and the Eagles were playing for a different outcome on Tuesday in San Antonio, but the Knights just had too much firepower and pulled off their third sweep of Geneva.
The Lady Knights won on their home court, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, to end the Lady Eagles’ season at 32-17.
Geneva made it to the state tournament last year, and head coach Tami Owens had to replace a lot of starters but said they did well to make it to the second round of the playoffs in 2025.
“Coming back from state last year with only one six-rotation player, we kind of had to put a team together again this year,” she said. “They did good and I’m proud of them.”
Owens credited Holy Cross serves as a big reason her team was swept for the third time by the Knights this year.
“They had some tough serves, and they were serving us really hard,” she said. “We hadn’t seen those serves before and that was a big part of it, our serve-receive.”
Geneva’s only lead in Game 1 came when they were up 3-2. Holy Cross went up by seven points before winning it by nine.
The Lady Knights led from start to finish in Game 2, but the Eagles were doing their best to avoid a sweep and had a strong start in the third set.
Geneva raced out to a 5-1 advantage in Game 3, forcing Holy Cross to burn its first timeout of the match.
After the timeout, the Knights came back and tied it at 7-7, but Ella Owens recorded the next kill, and it was 8-7 in favor of the Eagles. Unfortunately for Geneva, that would be their final lead of the night.
Holy Cross went on a 16-10 run to close it out and advance to the next round.
Coach Owens said she would miss her seniors. They are her daughter Ella Grace Owens, along with Elle Chalmers, Maggie Deimund and Sopris Oglesby.
“They were a great group that led the team with great leadership,” she said.
