Phil Alan Simpson, 78, of Boerne, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025 at Richland Township Cemetery. A private celebration of Phil’s life will be held at a later date.
Born on Feb. 23, 1947, to Maurie and Neva Simpson, Phil’s life was marked by a deep passion for art and education. He honorably served his country in South Korea after being drafted. Following his military service, Phil pursued his academic dreams, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Art, Painting, and Printmaking from Ball State University, and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Southern Illinois University.
Phil’s dedication to teaching shone through his various positions at esteemed institutions, including the University of Texas at El Paso, San Antonio Art Institute, San Antonio College, Coppini Academy of Fine Arts, and Majestic Ranch in Boerne. His profound love for working with steel allowed him to teach sculpture, painting, drawing, welding, and artistic blacksmithing at his personal studio, inspiring countless students.
Throughout his career, Phil’s professional accomplishments were widely recognized, with his artwork showcased in numerous local, state, and national exhibitions. He was the proud recipient of several prestigious art program awards, a testament to his talent and dedication.
Even as he journeyed through eight and a half years with Alzheimer’s, Phil’s spirit remained vibrant, allowing him to actively engage with his students until the very end, if even only in memory.
His zest for life and freedom was beautifully complemented by his enduring love for his Harleys. He cherished riding through the scenic Hill Country and was always eager to attend races, embracing anything with speed and competition. Phil is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Vicki Stone Simpson; his devoted son Cullom and his wife Courtney, who are expecting baby Juniper in January 2026. He was preceded in death by his loving mother, father, and sister Karen.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to sister Deb and Tim Vermillon and Trinity Hospice.
In lieu of floral remembrances, the family suggests that donations be made to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Foundation for Prairie Conservation (6220 Gaston Ave., Ste. 700, Dallas, TX 75214) to honor Phil’s memory.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the staff of Holt & Holt Funeral Home of Boerne. To share words of comfort with the family, please visit www.holtfh.com.
