The Boerne High football team concluded the regular season just like they were hoping – with a perfect district record and the 13-5A DII championship after they defeated Kerrville Tivy last Friday.
But they forgot one thing, a trophy to celebrate their district title. Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said that one’s on him.
“I totally forgot about it, I didn’t even think about it until after the game,” he said. “We won’t forget it again.”
In the end it didn’t matter, but Sawyer said if they win Friday’s home playoff game against Corpus Christi Ray, he’ll be sure to have a Bi-District trophy to hoist and take photos with.
This is the second consecutive year for the Greyhounds to host a playoff contest, something that’s allowed at the 5A level on up due to lack of stadium availability.
Sawyer said the team is looking forward to playing at least one more home game.
“We love our community and bringing them a home playoff game is special,” he said. “It’s always fun running out of the tunnel one more time and playing at home.”
The Greyhounds closed out the regular season at 9-1 and won their last nine games, including their last six district games.
Corpus Christi Ray is 5-5 overall and was the fourth-place team out of their district after they went 2-3.
Sawyer said they’ll approach this game like any other.
“We want to keep it consistent with what we’ve done all year and focus on us and making us the best we can be,” he said. “Our goal is to play a perfect game and we haven’t done that yet.”
Sawyer said he expects a tough contest from the Texans.
“They have a lot of skill kids that are good and they have a good running back,” he said. “They’re a sound team. We’re not playing slouches, and the stakes have risen.”
Kerrville Tivy was no slouch either and played the Greyhounds tough in a 3.5-hour game that BHS won, 62-35. There were 11 combined touchdowns in the first half.
“That was the most stressful 27-point win we’ve ever had. I knew their offense was really good, and they would put us in a bind early because they were so fast,” Sawyer said. “We made adjustments, but I thought we would make them sooner than we did. Once we got our feet under us, we were okay.”
After giving up four TDs in the first two quarters and taking a 49-28 lead into halftime, the Greyhounds only yielded one second-half TD.
BHS slowed down as well but still outscored the Antlers over the last two quarters, 13-7.
The 62 points the Greyhounds put up against the Antlers is a season high. Their previous high was 49 points twice, once vs. East Central, and the other came against Harlandale.
“We just kept scoring (against Kerrville) because we didn’t know how many points we were going to need and what it would take to win the game,” Sawyer said. “We just had to make sure we were executing at a certain level.”
Boerne did execute at a high level, especially at the quarterback spot after Grant Sweeney threw for 362 yards and added 155 rushing yards for 517 yards from scrimmage.
Jeff Morrison ran for 88 yards and three touchdowns, and Callan Combs finished with 74 rushing yards and two TDs.
Will Traylor hauled in six passes for 130 yards and a score, Beau Dayoc added 86 receiving yards on three catches, two of which went for scores, while Eli Nikolas came up with 79 receiving yards on seven catches.
Kole Traylor and Hadden Silva both came up with interceptions for the defense.
