Geneva School of Boerne closed out its regular season with a victory over Corpus Christi John Paul II last Friday at home.
It was also homecoming for the Eagles team that delivered a 69-0 trouncing over the Centurions to finish the year at 8-2 overall and 4-1 in district to place second.
Geneva is a team without a home for the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles are scheduled to host Bishop Gorman from Tyler and were hoping to play at home but have temporary lights in one corner of the field and head coach Bob Rosenstiel said their goal posts are not regulation, so they’re looking to move the game.
As of Tuesday morning, they were scheduled to play at Cornerstone Christian on Friday, 6 p.m.
“I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing at home,” Rosenstiel said.
Bishop Gorman finished the regular season at 2-8 overall and went 1-3 in district. Rosenstiel said they will use a balanced attack against his team.
“They’re pretty balanced, about 40 percent pass and 60 percent run,” he said. “It should be an evenly matched contest.”
Now that the playoffs have started, teams sometimes play teams from out of the area and aren’t as familiar with them, and Rosenstiel said that makes it tough to scout them.
“It’s hard to tell how good a team is on film,” he said. “Sometimes you can get a false sense of what their game is like.”
Rosenstiel was hoping to go into the “second season,” as the playoffs are called, with more players on the roster, but added that they just have to play with whoever is healthy.
“We’ve gone down in numbers, we have about eight guys on the sideline, but people are stepping up and filling those holes for us,” he said. “The good thing is that our defense is starting to click, it was impressive for me to watch last week, they were seeing what was coming.”
Rosenstiel said despite the number of players out, the offensive line has stayed relatively healthy.
“We still have our linemen that are healthy and (quarterback Caleb Quitadamo) is playing better than ever; he’s making smart decisions,” the coach said. “We have a running back by committee, so we share the load there and we just keep on trucking along with different dudes.”
Late in last week’s game, Rosenstiel let lineman Austin Hodo run with the ball because Hodo expressed an interest in playing the running back position for a few plays.”
Hodo actually scored in the fourth quarter.
“It was rewarding guys that have worked hard,” Rosenstiel said. “He’s always wanted to carry the ball, so we let him carry the ball.”
