SEGUIN — Comfort High had a tough draw in the opening round of the 3A-DII playoffs and was pitted against No. 1 stateranked El Maton Tidehaven Thursday in Seguin.
The Tigers scored early and often against the Bobcats at Matadors Stadium on their way to a 62-7 victory.
Comfort ends its season at 5-6, while Tidehaven remains unbeaten at 11-0 and moves on to the next round. The Tigers played for the state title in 2023 and are looking primed for a return trip to Jerry World in 2025.
Jullian Stockton put Tidehaven on the board just 21 seconds into the game with a 65-yard run, and it was 6-0 after a missed PAT. The missed kick was about the only thing Tidehaven did wrong on Thursday.
Kale Russell bumped the lead to 13-0 with a 1-yard run, and the game was less than four minutes old, but to Comfort’s credit, they didn’t give up another touchdown for a span of more than 12 minutes of game time.
Tidehaven’s Ethan Barker broke through on a 7-yard run to make it 20-0 and then Caiden Glaze hauled in a 34-yard TD pass from Russell, and it was 27-0 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Tigers tallied two more touchdowns to blow it open. Stockton took it to the house from 70 yards, and then Russell added a 5-yard run into the end zone to make it 41-0 going into the final stanza.
Comfort erased the shutout early in the fourth quarter after Bobcat quarterback Omar Rivera sprinted in from 52 yards, and it was 41-7 with 10:38 remaining in the contest.
Tidehaven closed out the game by recording the next three touchdowns and tallied at least two TDs in every quarter.
A 49-yard touchdown pass from Russell to Boogie Galvan, plus short runs from Russell and Andres Nunez of 1-yard each resulted in scores to make it 62-7 with 1:53 left, which is where it stayed until the end.
NOTES: In its last three games of 2025, Comfort played three 3A-DII teams ranked top 10 in the state. On Oct. 31, the Cats played Lexington (No. 10), the following week they tangled with Blanco (No. 9) and then faced Tidehaven (No. 1) in the playoffs. Comfort Coach Jay Rieken said he was proud of the team for their effort in all three games.
