U.S. House approves support, condolence for July

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House of Representatives approved a resolution Monday expressing condolences and support for victims of the July 4 flooding in Central Texas, honoring acts of heroism, and committing to stand with those impacted by the flood.

House Rep. Chip Roy (District 21-Texas) issued a statement following the resolution’s passage, acknowledging those who risked their lives in attempts to save others, all in the face of the dire conditions that weekend.

“Tonight, the House of Representatives showed unwavering support for Kerrville and all other communities impacted by the horrific flooding in the Texas Hill Country on July Fourth,” Roy said. “I am proud to represent this beautiful part of the world and so many faithful and heroic people.”

The resolution presented a timeline of the incident — from the heavy rains and flash flooding that swept through so many counties, to Gov. Greg Abbott’s prompt disaster declaration, to the response and resolve of so many first responders, law enforcement and emergency management officials, and resident volunteers who turned out by the thousands, all to aid their fellow Texans.

“I am grateful to all of my colleagues for their support of this resolution, and I am especially grateful for my colleagues in the Texas delegation for their constant support and strength,” Roy said.

The resolution said the catastrophic floods “are responsible for the loss of at least 135 individuals, including at least 37 children attending summer camp in Kerr County, where counselors and campers alike faced unimaginable peril.”

The resolution hails “first responders from across federal, state and local governments, emergency personnel and volunteers (who) demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, rescuing over 850 individuals from life-threatening situations.”

The action took a noted federal tone when President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration on July 6, ensuring federal resources and support were made immediately available to first responders and affected communities.

“The House mourns the profound loss of life and extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends and communities forever changed by this tragedy,” the resolution stated.

“The House honors the courage and sacrifice of first responders, volunteers and everyday Texans who risked their lives to save others and support their neighbors in need,” the document states.

Further, the House “encourages all authorities to prioritize the rebuilding of critical infrastructure and public facilities damaged by the flooding.”

Through the resolution, the House “stands united with all those affected by the July 5 flooding, pledging ongoing support and remembrance as the process of healing and rebuilding continues.”

“While this resolution serves as a reminder that our nation has not forgotten about all of those impacted, our work continues to rebuild in the Hill Country, and we will rebuild,” Roy added.

Roy was joined by 30 other members of the Texas house delegation as co-sponsors, including Rep. Tony Gonzales (Dist. 23-Texas).
