Eagles advance to TAPPS state semifinals

Geneva School of Boerne’s second- round playoff game with All Saints Episcopal from Tyler turned into a shootout last Friday.

The Eagles and Trojans combined for 66 first-half points, but the Eagles wore down the Trojans in the second half and held them to seven points over the final two quarters on its way to a 59-42 victory.

Geneva (10-2) faces Lubbock Christian (10-1) Friday at Abilene Christian in the TAPPS state semifinals, 4 p.m. Eagles coach Bob Rosenstiel said he wasn’t surprised that the teams combined for more than 100 points.

“I expected a tough game, and I expected some sort of shootout,” he said. “Our defense made some adjustments, and we held them to seven second-half points.”

After a 38-35 lead at the break, the Eagles outscored the Trojans, 21-7, in the second half.

Shae McNew scored twice in the first quarter, while Geneva QB Caleb Quitadamo also punched it in for the 21-14 lead late in the period.

All Saints returned the kickoff 95 yards to knot it at 21-21 with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Quitadamo put the Eagles back on top with a 34-yard sprint into the end zone. Parker Eiland made the extra point and then later booted a 32-yard field goal, and it was 31-21 midway through the second quarter.

All Saints tallied two touchdowns in the final six minutes, while Geneva’s Chase Doran scored for the Eagles to give them a 38-35 lead at halftime.

Geneva owned the second half and started things off with a 26-yard field goal from Eiland to bump the lead to six points at 41-35.

Brady Chander, who just came back from an injury, returned an interception 70 yards for a score, and after a missed extra point, Geneva was up 47-35 late in the third.

The Trojans recorded their only touchdown of the second half on a 46-yard touchdown run, and the lead was down to 47-42 with 11:52 left in the game.

Geneva closed out the contest with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to ice the game. Quitadamo found Chandler on a short pass, and it was 53-42 with 10 minutes remaining.

Chandler finished the game with 200 receiving yards in his return, while Bryce Hanover was also back in action for the Eagles.

McNew capped the contest with a short TD run into the end zone to make it 59-42 with 2:20 left. Neither team scored after that, and Geneva punched its ticket to the third round or state semifinals, their first time going that far since 2019.
