Geneva falls in TAPPS state semifinals

Geneva School of Boerne’s football season came to an end last Friday at the hands of Lubbock Christian.

The Eagles from Lubbock defeated the Eagles from Boerne Geneva last Friday in the TAPPS state semifinals on Thanksgiving weekend, 71-13.

It snaps Geneva’s fivegame winning streak and is their first loss since Oct. 9.

Geneva coach Bob Rosenstiel said Lubbock Christian is a solid team and has a chance to win this year’s state title.

“They have good talent and good size,” he said. “They have 24 upper classmen and it’s hard to compete with mostly sophomores and juniors. We battled though.”

Geneva tallied both its touchdowns in the first half, rushing touchdowns from Shae McNew and Caleb Quitadamo, but Lubbock just had too much firepower and tallied three touchdowns in the first quarter for the 21-7 lead.

Lubbock Christian found the end zone four times in the second quarter, while Geneva scored once in the period and it was 50-13 at the break and pretty much out of reach at that point.

Lubbock Christian tacked on three more touchdowns in the second half to get its 71 points.

Despite the score of their final game, the Eagles from Geneva put together a solid season at 10-3 and made it three rounds deep, surprising even Rosenstiel, who said they overachieved this year.

“Everyone wants to say, ‘we’re going state’ and you want to believe it, but you also have to be realistic about it,” he said. “I thought we could get to the second round this year and maybe expect this for next year, so I feel like we’re a year ahead of schedule.”

Rosenstiel said the key to their success this season was the players buying into what the coaches were selling and then playing with heart.

“They believed in us as a coaching staff, that we were putting them in the best situation to get the most out of them,” he said. “Our kids gave us everything they had. Some kids played four or five positions this year because of injuries but they stepped up.” This is Rosenstiel’s first year as the head coach, but this is his fourth year with the program. So, the seniors on this year’s team started high school when Rosenstiel started coaching at the school.

“It was exciting to go through a whole four-year cycle with these kids, I’ve seen all these guys as freshman and seen how they’ve grown and the leaders they’ve become,” he said. “They progressed each year and it was fun to watch. They’re a good group.”

The Geneva football team will gather one last time on Dec. 10 for their banquet at The Dominion Country Club to put the finishing touches on the 2025 season.

Seniors this year are Austin Hodo, Brady Chandler, Noah Brunsvold, Mason Sutton, Harris Priesmeyer, Reid Wilson and Jax Riddle.
