City sidewalk improvements coming

BOERNE — The city has been awarded a multimillion- dollar federal grant to expand its existing sidewalk infrastructure.

At its most recent meeting, the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Board approved $2.6 million in federal Transportation Alternatives grant funding through the AAMPO’s Call for Projects for fiscal years 2027 through 2030.

“This is the largest sidewalk grant we have received for Boerne,” said Jeff Carroll, Boerne engineering and mobility director. “By leveraging federal funds, we are advancing infrastructure The funded sidewalk improvements will be constructed at locations identified through a prior MPO mobility study, as well as through ongoing citizen comments and requests.”

According to Carroll, the areas targeted for enhancements include East Hosack, West Hosack, West Theissen and Schweppe streets; Herff and City Park roads; and a small extension of the Old No. 9 Trail.

The city will contribute 20% of the funds for the sidewalk project, with the grant covering the rest.

Officials said the sidewalk project aligns with the city’s broader mobility strategy to improve connectivity between neighborhoods and provide safe and accessible routes.

All sidewalk projects listed are at or near 100% design completion and will be fully designed within the next year, allowing construction to launch sooner, planners said.

This was a significant factor for AAMPO when reviewing the funding requests, they added.

City staffers submitted the grant application earlier this year.

AAMPO is a regional organization disbursing federal funding for transportation projects in the greater San Antonio area — Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe and a part of Kendall counties — while also developing plans such as Mobility 2050 and enhancing outcomes for drivers cyclists, pedestrians.

Carroll serves on the AAMPO Technical Advisory Committee and Mayor Pro Tem Ty Wolosin sits on the policy board.

“This funding is extremely competitive, with communities across the region competing for limited dollars,” Wolosin said. “Boerne’s success reflects a well-developed proposal and allows us to turn longstanding, shovel-ready projects into real improvements.”

Seguin, New Braunfels, Windcrest and Bexar County also were awarded projects for a total of $18.2 million in TA grant funding.
