Schmidt, Sena tag-team Boerne ISD campaigns

BOERNE — Boerne Independent School District board President Kristi Schmidt, Place 6, and board Secretary Rich Sena, Place 7, jointly announced their candidacies for re-election in the May 2, 2026, school board election.

Schmidt and Sena said that with a shared commitment to academic excellence, fiscal responsibility and preserving the unique Hill Country values of our community, they seek to continue their service to the students, families and taxpayers of Boerne ISD.

“It has been the greatest privilege to serve alongside dedicated educators, staff, and fellow trustees to provide world-class opportunities for our students,” Schmidt said. “From maintaining our consistent A-rating from the Texas Education Agency to expanding innovative programs like our P-TECH academies in health careers and cybersecurity, we’ve achieved remarkable progress, even while receiving $2,000 less per student in state funding than the average Texas district.”

Schmidt graduated from Southwest Texas, now Texas State, with a bachelor’s degree in education, specializing in middle school ELA/ reading/SS and minoring in child psychology.

Sena, in his 10th year as a BISD board trustee, received a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations from Colgate University.

“Great schools don’t happen by accident. They require teamwork, vision and careful stewardship of resources,” Sena said.

Key accomplishments for the district under Schmidt and Sena’s leadership include:

• Sustaining BISD’s elite A-rating, achieved by only 31 of 1,200 Texas school districts.

• Launching two P-TECH academies, positioning more than 200 seniors by 2028 to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at no additional cost to families.

•Achieving over 95% college, career or military readiness (CCMR) among graduates, far exceeding the state average of 82%.

• Saving taxpayers $27 million in interest through early debt payoff since 2023, with more substantial savings projected.

Beyond the boardroom, both trustees are deeply rooted in the Boerne community through years of volunteer service.

Sena serves on the board of the Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center, teaches Sunday School at Currey Creek Church, and has served as a civic leader through the Boerne Sunrise Rotary and the Kendall County Republican Club.

Schmidt, a former BISD teacher at Boerne Middle School North, volunteers through First Baptist Church Boerne and serves on the board of LKCK, remaining active in efforts that strengthen families and preserve the values that make Boerne unique.

“We are parents, educators, volunteers, and neighbors who understand the heart of this community,” Sena said.
