SAN ANTONIO – The Champion girls swim/dive team captured first place at the Region 7-5A swim and dive meet last weekend.
Champion won the girls regional title with 311 points and will advance several athletes to next weekend’s state meet where they Kate Canales, Addison Graham, Jada Green, Meghan Jackson, Cora Skoog and Carly Whitehead qualified, while Breanna Hempton, Addison Homann and Cayden Van Dyne will serve as alternates.
The top two finishers at regionals advance to state, and others can make it as a wildcard. The Lady Chargers are looking to defend their 5A state championship.
This year’s 5A state meet will be Feb. 20-21 on the UT campus in Austin.
Girls Results
The Champion girls broke four pool records at the SWISD Natatorium, and it started in the 200-medley relay after Karly Whitehead, Kate Canales, Addison Graham and Cora Skoog set a new pool record with a time of 1:43.42.
Addison Homann placed 2nd in the B finals (2:05) of the 200 free and Breanna Hempton was 4th (2:10), while Madi Neuman finished 7th in the 200 IM (2:20).
Cora Skoog took 2nd in the 50 free (23.69), Meghan Jackson placed 5th (25.29), while Jada Green came in 2nd in 1-meter diving with 362.15 points.
Kate Canales broke the pool record in the 100 butterfly with a 54.46 and Marlow Cooper was 8th in the B finals (1:16).
Cora Skoog won the 100 free (51.50) and Meghan Jackson took 1st in the B finals (55.91) to earn team points.
Addison Graham won the 500 freestyle (5:02), while Breanna Hempton was 6th in the B finals (6:04) and Lila Akin came in 8th in the B finals (6:35).
Meghan Jackson, Madi Neuman, Addison Graham and Karly Whitehead teamed up for 3rd in the 200-free relay (1:38).
Whitehead won the 100 backstroke with a pool-record time of 55.01 and Addison Homann was 8th in the B finals (1:09).
Kate Canales won another race after she took 1st in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.18) and just missed out on breaking the pool record she set last year (1:01.16), while Madi Neuman came in 7th in the race (1:08).
In the final race of the day, Skoog, Whitehead, Graham and Canales broke another pool record, this time in the 400-freestyle after combining for a 3:29.03.
