PROGRESSIVE VIEWS

The March 3 primary is about two weeks away. Kendall County will hold both a Democratic and a Republican primary, so voters can decide which candidates will appear on the ballot in November’s General Election.

Here in Kendall, we have one of the best election departments in the state. Elections Administrator Staci Decker and her staff provide thorough training for all election workers and are very organized and detail oriented. Rest assured that your vote will be recorded and counted accurately and the voting machines are secure.

The primary will include candidates for all partisan races, including statewide offices (governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, etc.), U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress, the Texas Senate, the Texas House of Representatives, and all countywide offices (such as county judge, county commissioners for precincts 2 and 4, county clerk, and more).

Dr. Adriann Wolfe will be on the Democratic ballot for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1; she is running unopposed in the Democratic primary. Texas holds an “open primary.” According to BallotPedia, “An open primary is any primary election in which a voter either does not have to formally affiliate with a political party in order to vote in its primary, or can declare their affiliation with a party at the polls on the day of the primary.”

Voters in Texas do not declare their party affiliation when registering to vote. Instead, a voter “declares” their party affiliation by choosing which primary to vote in.

When you visit your polling place, or when you request your ballot-by-mail, you will tell the voting clerk in which primary you want to vote. Once you’ve voted in one party’s primary, you cannot vote in the other party’s primary or runoff election. Voters will see only the candidates for the Primary of their choice — in other words, if you vote in the Democratic Primary, your ballot will not include any Republican candidates.

The Kendall County Democratic Party has been fielding many calls about the lack of new voter registration cards, which usually arrive by early January. According to Votebeat, “Texas’ unusual mid-decade redistricting and problems with the state’s new voter registration system have delayed the mailing of voter registration certificates.”

While you don’t need the card to vote, just your photo ID, voters have expressed concern about the delay. To check the status of your registration, visit www. votetexas.org.

To request an application to vote by mail, call the Kendall County Elections Office at 830-331-8701. To review eligibility requirements, visit the election office’s website.

Early voting begins on Tuesday and runs through Feb. 27. Early voting is held at the elections office on Fawn Valley.

Unfortunately, due to changes passed by the Texas Legislature, Comfort will not have an early voting location.

Election Day is Tuesday, March 3. Kendall County will have 11 polling locations and you can vote at any one of them. A list of locations is available on the election office website. Sample ballots listing all the candidates and races for each primary are available online as well.

The League of Women Voters hosts a non-partisan website, www.vote411.org, that also lists all the candidates that will appear on your ballot.

After the Primary, our Kendall County Democratic Party will hold its County Convention on Saturday, March 21 from 1:15-3:15 p.m. at the Boerne Public Library Community Room. Anyone who voted in the 2026 Democratic Primary may attend the convention and vote on convention business.

If you want to see your local and state party’s influence grow, participating in the convention process is a fantastic opportunity to make your Democratic Party stronger.

On that Saturday, Democrats from all over Kendall County will gather to learn more about taking action to support Democrats here at home. We will vote on important issues facing our party. We will elect delegates to advocate for our county’s needs.

We encourage all local Democrats to vote in the Democratic Primary so we can field the strongest slate of candidates for the November mid-term election. For details on voting or on the March Primary, call our office at 830-3311243 or visit www.kcdems. us
