City lining up HOT tax applicants

BOERNE — Boerne is accepting applications through March 19 from local groups and businesses for the annual disbursement of hotel occupancy tax (HOT) funds.

City staff will conduct an orientation session Thursday, March 4 at 4 p.m. at the Visitors Center, 282 N. Main St., for those who may have questions about the hotel occupancy tax fund application process. Each year, the city receives HOT revenue from a tax on guest rooms at local hotels, motels, inns and short-term rental facilities.

Organizations that offer programs to attract overnight tourists to fill those rooms may be eligible to receive a portion of the HOT funds, to support their programs.

State law requires hotel occupancy tax money to be spent on efforts to attract overnight tourists to the city’s hotels/motels and other lodging establishments, thus promoting the lodging industry.

Applicants must fit into one of nine categories: Convention and visitors’ centers; convention registration; advertising the city; promotion of the arts; historical restoration and preservation; sporting events in a county under one million in population; enhancing or upgrading existing sports facilities or sports fields; tourist transportation systems; or signage directing the public to sights and attractions that are visited frequently by hotel guests in the city.

Applications can be downloaded from the city’s website, www. ci.boerne.tx.us.

For details on, or to sign up for, the orientation session, call 830-249-7277 or email Jeanette Teague, Visit Boerne assistant director, at: [email protected].
