Geneva debate competition winners

BOERNE — Geneva School of Boerne eighth graders recently competed in an in-house debate tournament, addressing the resolution, “The benefits of the use of generative artificial intelligence outweigh the harms at a classical, Christian school.”

The winning team included Campbell Yarbrough, Charlotte Gerch and Wesley Izzo. Individual speaker awards were given to students with the highest individual speaker points in preliminary rounds. Claire Halinski was named the top speaker, second went to Juliana Pucinelli and Sarah Nichols took third place.

The eighth-grade class was divided into 18 teams, and each team argued a minimum of six times. All teams were required to argue both sides of the resolution. A preliminary round was held Feb. 25.

The top eight teams advanced to March 2’s single elimination break rounds. During break rounds, the side of the resolution that each team had to argue was determined by a coin toss at the beginning of the round.
