Boerne Champion kicked off the second round of 26-5A softball action Friday night at home against Veterans Memorial and was looking for a split after the Patriots took their first-round meeting to start the season.
The Chargers knocked out 9 hits and scored 8 runs, but came up short against the Patriots, 12-8. Champion drops to 3-6 in district (8-8 overall) and is on the road for two games this week. On Tuesday they visited Smithson Valley and travel to Alamo Heights on Friday.
Both teams started fast last Friday at Charger Field, but the Patriots had the better start and tallied 11 runs in their first two at bats, while Champion recorded 5 runs to make it 11-5 after two innings.
Things slowed down after that, and the Chargers outscored Veterans Memorial over the last five innings, 3-1, but couldn’t catch them.
Champion pushed in all 3 of those runs in the bottom of the fourth frame and it was 11-8 and the Chargers were within striking distance but were kept off the board in the last three innings, while the Patriots added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it 12-8.
Torin Tucker singled, drove in a run and scored twice and McKenzie Wilson plated 2 runs, while Brylyn Thornburgh had a strong game and finished with a double, a single, a walk, an RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
Mylie Parker also swung the bat well and hit a double, a single and picked up 4 RBI, while Reese Rogers and Teagan Rogers both singled and pushed in a run, and Molly Baxter recorded 2 singles and scored a run.
Anna Hurst and Parker shared time in the circle after Hurst went 1.1 innings and Parker threw the final 5.2 innings. Hurst walked 2 and struck out 3, while Parker gave up 1 walk and sat down 4.
