6-5
Beating a baseball team twice in a week is never easy and Alamo Heights sure made it tough on Boerne Champion last Friday at Charger Field.
It took a play at the plate to end the game and give Champion the sweep they were looking for against the Mules.
The Chargers prevailed 6-5 in last Friday’s contest that contained six lead changes after beating the Mules on Tuesday. The play at the plate for the third out in the top of the seventh kept the Mules from tying it and kept the game from going to the bottom half of the inning.
Champion improved to 4-1 in district (18-2-1 overall) and enters the week ranked No. 5 in the latest Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.
The Chargers hosted Boerne High Tuesday and will visit Greyhound Field on Friday.
Last Friday’s game started with a home run from Mules’ leadoff batter Blake Bader for the quick 1-0 lead. But the Chargers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first after a Cal Isley double brought in Owen Kuhl to tie it. Isley later scored on a Garland Whitehead sac fly and it was 2-1.
The Mules retook the lead in the top of the second by pushing in a pair of runs, and Alamo Heights was back on top, 3-2, but just like in the first, Champion fired back with a couple of runs.
In the bottom of the second, courtesy runner Jaxson Denman scored on a ground out by Zak Al-Arashi and then Kuhl singled to bring in Ethan Jensen, and the Chargers were up 4-3, but the Mules turned a double play to stop the bleeding.
Alamo Heights used a triple from Albert Colglazier in the fourth to push in two more runs, and the Mules were leading again, 5-4, and then their defense came up big in the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Champion loaded the bases, but Alamo Heights turned a triple play to get out of the jam and maintain a 5-4 edge after a pop up was caught in the infield and runners were off their respective bases.
Undaunted, the Chargers flipped the scoreboard one more time in the fifth with a pair of runs. A sac fly by Jaedyn Yamaguchi brought in Brody Bendele after he reached on a single and then a double from Jensen brought in Denman and the Chargers were back on top 6-5.
Neither team scored in the sixth to take it to the seventh inning. Luke Massay made it safely on for the Mules, but there were two outs. Finnegan Tingle came up and doubled to left and Massay tried to score from first.
Chargers’ leftfielder Zak Al-Arashi picked up the ball, threw to shortstop Garland Whitehead, who fired the ball to the catcher Jaedyn Yamaguchi for the dramatic play at the plate. Yamaguchi did a nice job of blocking the plate and the umpire ruled Massay out to end the game.
Brody Eisert started on the hill and went 2 innings and struck out 2, while Kuhl threw the final 5 frames and fanned 5 to get the win. Both gave up 4 hits, 2 walks and 1 earned run.
Kuhl also had 3 of their 9 hits and Isley finished with 2 hits and both scored once.
