Lady Hounds hold on to upset Veterans Memorial

The Boerne High softball team stayed in the hunt for playoff spot after the Lady Greyhounds pulled off a big win last Friday night, 5-4.

BHS defeated district front-runner Veterans Memorial at Greyhound Field and handed the Lady Patriots only their second loss in 26-5A.

Boerne improved to 5-6 in district (14-6 overall) and was looking for another upset on Tuesday when they visited Smithson Valley, which moved into sole possession of first place after Veterans Memorial’s loss.

The Patriots slipped to second and are tied with Pieper at 9-2, while New Braunfels (6-4) and Kerrville Tivy (6-5) are ahead of Boerne (5-6) in the standings.

In last Friday’s game, Boerne was up 5-1 with two innings to go, but the Patriots made it interesting with a couple of runs in the sixth to trim the lead down to 5-3.

After BHS didn’t score in the bottom of the sixth, Veterans Memorial pushed in another run and had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh, but Leni Caldwell ended the threat after she fielded a grounder at first base and stepped on the bag to end the game.

Boerne lost to the Patriots in the first round by a run and also fell to New Braunfels and Kerrville Tivy by one run, so they’ve dropped three one-run contests and were tripped up by Pieper by two runs.

Greyhounds coach Chester Pettibon said the team learned from those games and added that it was part of why they won on Friday.

BHS finished with 10 hits and were led at the plate by Kenley Thomason, who knocked out 3 singles and scored a run, while Riley Partin doubled and singled and scored a run.

Maddie Vasquez tallied 2 singles and drove in 2 runs, Tessa Murphy singled and scored, Addison Reidy singled, walked twice, pushed in 2 runs and scored 2 runs and Cerissa Nasis singled.

Micah Bellamy went the distance in the circle and yielded 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 5 walks and struck out 4 batters on 107 pitches.
