After falling behind 1-0 after a leadoff home run by Pieper in the first inning, the Champion baseball team scored the last eight runs of the game and went on to defeat the Warriors, 8-1.
The No. 9 state-ranked Chargers improved to 6-2 in district (20-3-1 overall) and closed out their series with Pieper on Thursday in Boerne. They’ll play a series with New Braunfels this coming week.
Pieper’s Cash Edwards smacked a solo home run in the first inning for the 1-0 lead, but the Warriors were kept off the board the rest of the way.
After the Edwards homer, Pieper only recorded two more hits as Charger pitcher Ethan Coleman settled in on the mound and scattered 2 hits over the next five frames. Coleman left after six innings and yielded 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and struck out 8.
Cal Isley entered in relief, and after Pieper’s first batter reached in the seventh thanks to an error, Isley and the rest of the defense retired the side with a fly out, a strike out and a ground out.
The Chargers plated a single run in the second to tie it at 1-1, tallied 3 runs in the third and added another run in the fifth thanks to an Isley home run for the 5-1 lead. Champion closed it out with a 3-run seventh inning for the 8-1 lead.
Besides his home run, Isley also banged out 2 singles, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times, Austin Garritano doubled, picked up 2 RBI and scored once and Owen Kuhl doubled and scored.
Brody Bendele singled, walked and scored 2 runs, Garland Whitehead singled and pushed in 2 runs, Patrick Hall walked twice, Jaedyn Yamaguchi singled and Caiden Cruz singled and scored.
