Boerne High’s 4-1 lead didn’t hold up on Tuesday night after Alamo Heights outscored BHS 5-0 in the last two innings to defeat the Greyhounds, 6-4.

Tuesday’s setback at Greyhound Field drops BHS to 6-4 in district (14-9 overall). Boerne closed out their series with the Mules on the road Thursday and visits San Marcos on Wednesday in a non-district contest.

The Alamo Heights victory overshadowed a stellar pitching performance by Boerne’s Jackson Grimes, who struck out 14 batters but left with a no-decision. Grimes went six innings but reached 106 pitches and left with the game tied at 4-4 after six frames.

Prior to that, BHS held a 4-1 lead and seemed to be cruising. It was 1-1 after two innings and then the Hounds plated 3 runs in the fifth frame after Eli Srp, Otis Skubal and Jake Perez scored.

But the Mules climbed back into it in the top of the sixth and recorded three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. A pop up to shortstop Colton Shaver and a strikeout made it two away, but consecutive singles by Alamo Heights pushed in 3 runs to tie it up at 4-4.

In the bottom half of the inning, Boerne put a runner at third with no outs after Josh Kory doubled, and his courtesy runner, EJ Goolsby advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Mules defense buckled down and River Rupp struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

In the seventh, the Mules took advantage of four walks to score two runs and held a 6-4 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, Rupp retired three straight batters with two fly balls and a strikeout to end it.

BHS finished with 5 hits and Kory had two of them, while Grimes and Srp both picked up RBIs.

In his six innings of work, Grimes scattered 7 hits and gave up 2 walks, while Ronnie Scarbrough and Braden Ramirez pitched in the seventh inning.

Rupp went the whole way for the Mules and closed it out with 106 pitches to match Grimes. He gave up 5 hits, 3 walks and fanned 4, while Mules’ catcher Max Gutierrez finished with 3 RBI.
