New youth services manager joins library ahead of summer programs

We are looking forward to welcoming Deanna O’Marah to our team, who starts May 18.

Deanna, aka “Miss Dee Dee,” brings a wealth of experience as an elementary school librarian and educator, with a strong passion for supporting children and families through literacy programming, collection management and meaningful community engagement.

Her impressive background includes providing professional development at all levels. Deanna has proved to be a great leader, with extensive experience supervising staff and volunteers, managing library collection and coordinating large-scale programs that enrich learning.

Her expertise in youth-focused services from pre-K through fifth grade, combined with her technology assistance and collaborative partnerships, makes her an incredible addition to our organization.

Plus, she has an amazing silly- hat collection.

Summer excitement around the corner

Our summer program planners kicked into high gear and came up with an incredible lineup for June and July.

This year, the theme is “Unearth a Story,” and I’ll let you in on a secret — we are going to experience lots of dinosaurs running amok in the library.

Be sure to come to the summer’s opening event from noon to 3 p.m. May 30. The rest of the next two months will be packed with a multitude of programs, including everything from dinos to dirt to rocks and movies.

No summer library program would be complete without an amazingly fun reading challenge. Again, the challenge is for all ages. For each task completed, you receive one dino collector card and a drawing ticket. The more you read, the better chance you have of winning a prize.

You can also collect exclusive dino cards if you attend certain programs. All this information will be accessible on our web calendar at boernelibrary.org, and on our paper calendar, which will soon be available to the public.

On break in May

As staff gear up for the summer, most of our youth programming will be on hiatus during the month of May, until our summer programming kicks into high gear. Children can still visit the library to pick out great books and play with toys that spark the imagination.

Did you know?

The library offers a wide array of free databases to our patrons. TexShare, which is available to every person in Texas, is loaded with many databases, but we also have Mango Languages, an international cooking database, and we also house a large number of digitized archive materials through Biblioboard. Please don’t hesitate to stop by and ask us how to access all our databases.

Staff promotions

We are excited to announce that Robin Stauber, adult services librarian for nearly 14 years, will be the first-ever adult services manager. Cassidy Herrera, who has been our youth services assistant, has moved to the newly created position of youth services coordinator.

The library is so fortunate to have both of these talented ladies working here.

Library closure

The library will be closed on May 25, in observance of Memorial Day; however, we will be open on Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep in mind that you can still conduct much of your library business either through our website or mobile app.
