Between cloudbursts and the threat of more rain, 511 members of the Boerne-Champion High School Class of 2026 marched across the stage Thursday with diplomas in hand and hopes for a sunny future.

The commencement exercise took place at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Precipitation rolling into the area about 6:45 p.m. drenched hundreds of family members and friends struggling to find parking and a dry spot to stand.

The downpour, however, didn’t dampen their enthusiasm, even as audience members remained in line outside the stadium during a “temporary postponement” of the ceremony at 8:10 p.m.

But just 20 minutes later, gates opened — the arena had been locked down — and Champion students who spent about two hours waiting inside the Boerne High School auditorium filed out on the field.

Officials with the Boerne Independent School District wasted no time getting students across the stage. No speeches were delivered, and no on-stage introductions were given.

As the final graduates crossed the stage and fireworks were ignited, thunder could be heard and lightning flashed in the distance as another storm approached.
