Boerne High is traveling to Round Rock on Friday to kick off the 2026 football season and will take on Westwood.
The Greyhounds and Warriors are two teams that have taken different paths lately. Boerne has won three of the last four regional titles, while Westwood hasn’t made the playoffs during that stretch.
In fact, the last time the Warriors punched their ticket to the postseason was in 2017 and are looking to end an eight-year drought.
In 2023, Westwood finished fifth in league play after going 4-3 in district (7-3 overall) and just missed the playoffs since only the top four teams from each district advance.
In the two years prior and after the 2023 season, Westwood only won a combined 10 games in those four years, while the Greyhounds won 13 games just last year.
Still, Boerne head coach Brett Sawyer said they can’t take anybody lightly.
“They’re a good team and well coached,” he said about the Warriors that have a chance at a playoff spot this year and are picked to finish fifth in their district.
Boerne has never played Round Rock Westwood and Sawyer said it’s different when you don’t know a lot about a team from out of the area as opposed to playing someone every year.
“You don’t have a lot of film so it’s hard to game plan and it’s the first game of the year,” he said. “You don’t know a lot of their tendencies, so you stick close to what you do and focus more on yourselves.”
With 14 starters back, Sawyer didn’t let his returners play too much in their two scrimmages but likes where they are as a team.
“I’m happy with where we’re at, the scrimmages are more for the younger guys and not as important for returning starters,” he said. “Scrimmages are a chance to give starters a chance to get into rhythm.”
Even with a lot of starters returning, Sawyer said they had some questions and found some answers.
“We graduated two receivers and a lineman. We also lost some linebackers, tackles and two defensive backs,” he said. “We’re figuring out who is going to fill those spots.”
