Boerne High had a solid opening-season win last Friday against Round Rock Westwood and it was their first-opening day victory since 2022.
Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said while they didn’t “wow” anybody with the win, it’s a victory and something to build on. The Greyhounds (1-0) look to build on their 34-14 win Friday at home against the Laredo United Longhorns.
“I’ve been in Boerne nine years and we’ve never been gang busters at the beginning of the year. It was the first game and everybody is trying to get the kinks out,” he said. “It’s like I told the team, it’s not about where we are right now, we have to learn from it and figure it out. We have to get better every week and keep improving. We executed fairly well for our first game and got that first win but saw what we need to work on.”
One of the highlights offensively for Boerne was scoring four straight touchdowns to pull away and break a 7-7 tie against the Warriors.
“The O line did really well and Callan Combs ran the ball well,” Sawyer said.
Combs paced the ground game with 89 yards on 12 carries and a TD, while Greyhound quarterback Grant Sweeney had a rushing touchdown on a QB sneak and completed 14 of 29 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.
Jacob Hicks caught five passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Kysen Biela led BHS with eight tackles and Ronald Smith intercepted a pass.
“Our defensive tackles had a good game,” Sawyer said. “We lost some players to graduation and that was good to see.” The Longhorns are predicted to win 30-6A, so Sawyer expects Laredo United to play them tough like they have the last two years. In the 2025 contest last year, the Greyhounds won 35-31 and had to rally for the victory, and in 2024, Boerne beat the Longhorns by a touchdown, 28-21.
“They always play us well and they’re well coached,” Sawyer said about United’s David Sanchez, who is in his third decade of coaching. “I enjoy playing them, they don’t talk trash and they love competing, and their coach knows what he’s doing.”
Sawyer said they didn’t commit any major mistakes last week against Westwood and added that they’ll focus on small things this week as they look to improve.
“It’s the little details, getting the little things right and fine tuning and executing our base stuff,” he said. “We just have to be more consistent.”
Laredo United is coming off a 46-21 loss to 6A Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North and doesn’t want to slip to 0-2. Sawyer said the Longhorns like to pass and will air it out this Friday.
“ They throw it around pretty good,” he said. “They’re sound and make you beat them and take what you give them.”
