Things went about as good as could be expected for the Boerne Champion football team last week after they went down to Laredo United and pummeled the Panthers, 60-7.
The 1-0 Chargers are home this week to host a new school, Long Creek, out of the New Braunfels district. This is the Dragons’ first varsity season, and they lost their opener to Davenport last week, 37-26.
Champion head coach Blane Ellis said some may be surprised at the 60 points his team scored but added that he wasn’t.
“We’re further along than we were last year at this point because we have so much back,” he said. “We rushed for 200 yards in the first half, so that’s a good recipe for success.”
Long Creek doesn’t have a long history and only has one official varsity game under their belt. They played an outlaw schedule for the last two years and don’t have any players that came over from New Braunfels High. All their players went from the middle school straight into Long Creek.
Ellis said it’s tougher to scout a new school but added that they just keep it simple.
“You don’t overthink it,” he said. “There’s not a lot of stuff to dive into and you have limited film, but you keep it simple.”
Based on what he has seen, Ellis said the Dragons will look to keep it on the ground.
“All of their explosive plays (against Davenport) came from their run game,” he said. “They’re big up front and want to establish the run, we have to make sure formationally we line up right. Their quarterback is a good player, a tough kid and a competitor.”
Even though they scored 60 points, Ellis said there are things they need to improve on.
“Offensively we had a few false starts and we need to clean that up. We also need to work on communicating,” he said. “Defensively we played a clean game, they only had one or two explosive plays on us.”
Champion’s defense was sharp and only gave up one first down in the first half.
Offensively, Ryder Flugence went 11 for 19 through the air for 145 yards and a touchdown in two quarters of work, while Caleb Farias ran for 148 yards on 19 carries and four touchdowns. Seven different receivers caught a pass and Will Burgess led the team in receiving yards with 42, while Cason Riha had 3 catches for 18 yards and a score.
Graham Zamponi paced the defense with 12 solo tackles and assisted on three others. Roman Flugence intercepted a pass and Drayden Cooper picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown.
