Even though the Boerne Champion football team has scored 122 points in two games and only given up 21 points for a positive point differential of 101 points, Chargers coach Blane Ellis said there are still areas they can improve on as they enter district play this Friday.
Champion hosts Bastrop Cedar Creek Friday at BISD Stadium to begin 13-5A DI action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“We’ve got to clean up a few things. There’s been holding stuff and personal fouls. There are some little things, but they are hustle fouls, we just have to rein it in a little bit. We’re always going to look and see what we can get better at,” he said. “We’re playing well in all three phases and a little bit ahead of where we were last year, but our focus is on the finer details. We want to dive into those things because that’s what it’s going to take to win a district championship and make a long run in the playoffs.” The Greyhounds took over and ran the ball on eight of their next nine plays. The one time they did throw, it drew a 15-yard pass interference flag on a throw from Grant Sweeney to Zach Freasier and gave BHS a first down at the Longhorns 24.
“We knew we could block them up front and run and that stopped them from blitzing,” Sawyer said. “Plus, we had two timeouts and the two-minute timeout, and we didn’t have to score (a touchdown) we just needed a field goal.
“Also, our defense was playing well in the second half, so I felt better about it,” he added.
On the next play after the pass interference, Sweeney took it to the house to cap the drive and gave Boerne the lead, 41-34, after Diego Jimenez booted the extra point. Jimenez was clutch and also kicked field goals of 33 and 30 yards to help the Hounds pile up the points.
After the Sweeney score, United still had 48 seconds to work with, but Ronnie Brooks turned the Longhorns away with an interception with 18 ticks on the clock.
Sawyer said he wasn’t worried about some of the big plays that his defense gave up. The Longhorns burned them for 73 yards on the second play of the game and also hit TD strikes of 60, 57 and 42 yards – all in the first half.
Sawyer said those were easy fixes.
“It’s a matter of executing what we’re supposed to do. It’s the second play of the game and we have two safeties on the same hash, that’s just that you weren’t paying attention,” he said. “That was a big mental mistake that shouldn’t have happened, and it did. Luckily, we were able to sneak away with a win, but you can’t have mistakes like that and win the way you want to.”
Davenport beat Long Creek in their opener, 37-26, and defeated Leander Glenn last week, 58-20.
Sweeney said non-district games like Davenport and Laredo United are helping them get ready for district play.
“I have some rust to shake off, but it’s getting there and I think by district we’ll be there,” he said.
