For the second week in a row, the Boerne Champion football team has hit the 60-point plateau after the Chargers defeated New Braunfels Long Creek 62-14 Thursday in their home opener at Boerne ISD Stadium.
Champion was coming off a 60-7 win the previous week against Laredo United South and stands at 2-0 as they close out non-district play. The Chargers open district action next Friday at home against Bastrop Cedar Creek.
Chargers head coach Blane Ellis said he’s not surprised that they’ve scored 122 points in two games. They’ve basically done most of the damage within the first two quarters of each contest since a lot of the starters have been on the sideline for a lot of the second half after intermission.
“We’ve talked about playing with efficiency and accuracy and in our two first halves that we’ve played, we’ve played with efficiency and accuracy,” Ellis said. “It’s not surprising to us, we know where we’re at and know who we have, and we knew we were going to be an explosive team.”
Explosive is right. Sophomore QB Ryder Flugence tossed five touchdown passes and ran for another, but it was his brother, Roman, who had the first score of the game when he returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game.
The Charger D also returned an interception for a touchdown in last week’s game in Laredo.
Ryder tossed TD passes to Zachary Lopez and Mason Clayton in the first quarter for the 21-0 lead.
Ryder had his third TD pass of the night for the 28-0 advantage before the Dragons recorded their first score of the night on a 21-yard run by Isaiah Martinez to make it 28-7. Ryder then ran in a touchdown of 12 yards to help the Chargers take a 35-7 lead into halftime.
As well as Champion played in the first half, their best offensive quarter came in the third after they tallied four touchdowns to blow the game open at 62-7.
Ryder found Lopez and Burgess on scoring strikes of 27 and 39 yards, while Julian Navarrete ran in touchdowns of 1 and 29 yards to account for their four TDs in the period.
Ryder Flugence said he knew before the season started that they were going to be able to put up a lot of points but added that they’re just getting going.
“I knew it was possible; we have the group to do amazing things. I truly believe this group can do anything,” he said. “We can get so much better, I truly believe this is the beginning.”
The Dragons added a late rushing touchdown as they battled until the end to close out the scoring on Thursday.
Champion’s defense came up with three more interceptions in the game and has five total this year.
Besides the Roman Flugence Pick-6, Aiden Styskal and Mason Klahr also intercepted passes in Thursday’s game.
“If we get that many take-aways every game, it’s going to be a fun year,” Ellis said.
