Geneva takes perfect record on the road to Shiner St. Paul

The Geneva School of Boerne football team will take its perfect record on the road Friday when they visit Shiner St. Paul as they close out the non-district portion of their schedule.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Shiner.

The Eagles have looked impressive as they’ve rolled to a 3-0 record and have tallied 48, 49, 49 in their three wins.

In their first two games, Geneva smothered their opponents but last week’s opponent, TMI – Episcopal, gave the Eagles a challenge, which is what Eagles coach Adam Foren wanted.

“They’re a good team and they’ll win a lot of games this year,” he said. “TMI is a really talented team, but we have to make sure that we have the same approach every week.”

Unlike TMI, Geneva’s first two opponents were run heavy teams and Foren said St. Paul will look to keep the ball on the ground as well.

“They’re about 80 percent run,” he said. “Their coach is an eight-time state champion and he knows how to get his players to play hard.”

Foren said one of the keys to Geneva’s offensive success is that they kept things very similar to what they were doing before the first-year head coach arrived on campus.

“They’ve had good coaches and good players before I got here so it would be arrogant of me to come in and change everything,” he said. “We have similar concepts, maybe some name changes and it’s different in how we teach it, but overall, it’s not that much different.”

So far, Foren has liked the results.

“Offensively, I thought there would be a two- or three-week acclimation period, but our kids have bought in,” he said. “I’m proud of the kids for that, things have gone smoother than expected.”

The coach said the defense has done well getting the other team to cough up the rock.

“We’ve been able to get teams to turn the ball over,” he said. “The defense came up with three turnovers against TMI and that led to 21 points, so we want to keep that going.”

Shiner St. Paul is 1-1 and lost to St. Joseph, 21-12, and bounced back to beat Bloomington, 26-7. The Cardinals were scheduled to play Aug. 28, but that game was called because of lightning strikes and wasn’t made up.
