Lady Chargers sweep John Jay to open district

Boerne Champion opened district play Tuesday at Charger Gym and defeated John Jay in straight sets.

The Lady Chargers tamed the Lady Mustangs, 25-18, 25-14, 25-8. Champion is 21-5 overall after the victory and starts district at 1-0. They visited Harlandale Friday as they continued 26-5A action.

Prior to Tuesday’s match with the Mustangs, the Lady Chargers lost to Dripping Springs and entered the week ranked No. 21 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.

Against John Jay, Abby Marizcurrena paced the team in kills with 10, while Finley Weikle added 8 kills and Hailey Pfahlert had 5 kills.

Brielle Boothe served up 5 aces, while Aleah Ramirez and Pfahlert both dropped in 3 aces for the Chargers team that recorded 15 aces in the match.

Sydney Hass and Olivia Sansone both finished with a block, Boothe came up with 9 digs, Shay Brothers added 8 digs, Marizcurrena and Ramirez both tallied 6 digs and Brady Cooksey finished with 5 digs and 20 assists, while Pfahlert added 6 assists.

Vs. Dripping Springs

The Lady Tigers defeated the Chargers in four sets, 25-21, 25-22, 14-25, 25-22.

Champion put up some good numbers despite the loss after Finley Weikle finished with 19 kills and Hannah Perez added 8 kills, while Brady Cooksey had a solid match with 28 assists, 15 digs, 7 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks.

Brielle Boothe and Seyla Boothe both dropped in 2 aces, Olivia Sansone recorded 2 blocks, Perez came up with a team-high 19 digs and Hailey Pfahlert tallied 9 assists.

NOTES: After Tuesday’s win, the Chargers celebrated two individual milestones after sophomore Finley Weikle reached 500 kills for her Champion career, while junior Hannah Perez reached 500 career digs as a Charger. For photos, be sure to check the Boerne Star.
